Eligibility Criteria for NDA

To join the National Defence Academy (NDA), candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. Below are the key requirements:

  • Nationality
  • Indian Citizen: Must be a citizen of India.
  • Other Eligibility: Subjects of Bhutan, Nepal, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India. Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and East African countries like Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible.
  • Age Limit
  • Age Range: Candidates must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years old.
  • Date of Birth: The exact dates are specified in the official notification released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Gender and Marital Status
  • Gender: Only male candidates are eligible.
  • Marital Status: Candidates must be unmarried and should remain unmarried until the completion of training.
  • Educational Qualifications
  • For Army Wing: Passed or appearing in Class 12 of the 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
  • For Air Force and Naval Wings: Passed or appearing in Class 12 of the 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
  • Physical Standards
  • Physical Fitness: Candidates must be physically fit as per the standards prescribed by the NDA.
  • Height and Weight: Minimum acceptable height is 157 cm (162.5 cm for the Air Force). Height and weight should be proportionate.
  • Visual Standards: Better eye 6/6, worse eye 6/9 for Army; other specific requirements for the Air Force and Navy.
  • Other Health Criteria: No history of weak constitution, bodily defects, or diseases, and should not be overweight or underweight.
  • Medical Examination
  • Medical Test: Candidates must pass a rigorous medical examination conducted by the Armed Forces Medical Services.
  • Conditions: Certain medical conditions and physical disabilities may disqualify candidates.
  • Selection Process
  • Written Examination: Conducted by UPSC, consisting of Mathematics and General Ability Test.
  • SSB Interview: Candidates who pass the written exam undergo the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which includes psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interviews.
  • Final Merit List: Based on the candidate’s performance in the written exam and SSB interview.

NDA Exam Pattern

The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and comprises two stages: a written examination and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. Below is a detailed breakdown of the exam pattern.

1. Written Examination
The written examination consists of two papers: Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).
Mathematics
Duration: 2.5 hours
Maximum Marks: 300
Number of Questions: 120
Type of Questions: Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)
Syllabus: Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Vector Algebra, Statistics, and Probability.

General Ability Test (GAT)
Duration: 2.5 hours
Maximum Marks: 600
Number of Questions: 150
Type of Questions: Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)
Syllabus:Part A: English (200 marks) – Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension, and cohesion.
Part B: General Knowledge (400 marks) – Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography, and Current Events.

Marking Scheme
Correct Answer: 2.5 marks for Mathematics, 4 marks for each GAT question.
Negative Marking: 0.83 marks deducted for each incorrect answer in Mathematics, and 1.33 marks deducted for each incorrect answer in GAT.
2. Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview
Candidates who qualify the written examination are called for the SSB interview. The SSB interview is conducted over a span of 4-5 days and is divided into two stages:
Stage 1
Screening Test: Includes the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT).
Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on their performance in the screening test for Stage 2.
Stage 2
Psychological Tests: Includes Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self-Description Test (SD).
Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO): Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task, Individual Obstacles, Command Task, and Final Group Task.
Personal Interview: Conducted by interviewing officers to assess the candidate’s personality and suitability for a career in the armed forces.
Conference: A final meeting to discuss and decide the candidate’s suitability for the armed forces.
Total Marks for SSB Interview: 900

Final Merit List
The final selection is based on the combined marks obtained in the written examination and the SSB interview. The merit list is prepared based on these combined scores, and candidates are allocated to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA based on their preferences and merit position.
